"Our 2001 Cardinale exhibits layers upon layers of dense flavors wrapped in a velvet texture, defining power and finesse. The wine opens up with aromas of rich, black fruits, dark plum, ripe black cherry, roasted coffee, violet, slight herb notes and toasted oak. In the mouth, the wine offers fruit forward essence with middle richness, and back pallet opulence balanced with a sweet vanilla/oak tonality. Tannins are chewy and add to lushness."
—Christopher Carpenter, Cardinale Winemaker
93+ Points—"The 2001 Cardinale allies power with elegance, exhibiting a sweet nose of black fruits, pain grille, espresso roast, and toasty oak. Rich, full-bodied, opulent, and surprisingly forward, it possesses copious quantities of fruit and glycerin in addition to a heady, voluptuous finish that lasts for 45+ seconds."
—Robert M. Parker, Jr., The Wine Advocate, December of 2003
Cardinale is more than one wine—it is several wines, wines from disparate places along the Mayacamas and Vaca mountains that surround Napa Valley. Every bottle reveals the artistic sensibility of the winemaker, each vineyard lot fused into a seamless blend in which you can sense the constituent parts, but still taste them as one wine. Our philosophy is guided by the pursuit of grape selectivity in the vineyard, gentle handling and the ability to accommodate the different winemaking needs of each vintage. |
